Rhode Island WWTF Sustainable Energy Management System Project</titl= e> <o:SmartTagType namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name=3D"State"/> <o:SmartTagType namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name=3D"place"/>  <style>  </style>  </head> <body lang=3DEN-US link=3Dblue vlink=3Dpurple style=3D'tab-interval:.5in'> <div class=3DSection1> <st1:State w:st=3D"on"><st1:place w:st=3D"on">Rhode Island</st1:place></st1:Sta= te> WWTF Sustainable Energy Management System Project<o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> In September 2008 the NBC, RIDEM, URI and RIMES (the Project Partners) received $275,000 in grant funds from EPA to help Rhode Island’s 19 Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facilities develop and implement site specific individ= ual Sustainable Energy Management Systems using EPA’s “Energy Management Guidebook for Wastewater and Water Utilities”. Through this program each participating WWTF will be given free training, guidance, and assistance by energy management professional with the development of sound = and sustainable energy management practices that will result in more energy efficient operations and an overall reduction in energy costs. Also, significant efforts will be made to identify potential use of renewable ene= rgy resources (wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and hydro). <o:p></o:p></= p> <o:p></o:p> Studies referenced by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency and the Water Research Foundation estimate that wastewater treatment facilities nationally should = be able realize energy savings of between 15 and 30% using properly developed = and implemented energy management programs. Based on information gained through various historical and on-going NBC energy management projects and activities the Project Partners anticipate that this project could improve = the energy efficiency of participating WWTFs by a <= u>minimum of 5 to 10 %, and potentially decrease a participating WWTF’s energy demand from the local power grid as much as 10 to 20% through the use available renewable energy resources. <o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p></= span> A Project “Kick-Off= 221; meeting is being planned for mid February.
